Athletics Update

While COVID-19 has certainly limited what we have been able to do, the Porter Athletic Family has continued to support each other, connect, and find ways to make it work! This work has reaped some huge dividends for our Porter Athletic teams!

Boys' swim and dive had one of the most successful seasons for the program in recent memory, earning the SWSC Conference title and going undefeated in meets! Tommy Abramite, Ryan O’Connor, Matthew Johnson, and a host of other names turned in outstanding times and performances all year!

Dance has also been hitting the floor and putting in some great work! The team finished 2nd in the SWSC Blue division and had one of the largest squads in the program's history. The team had some amazing seniors in Taylor Bowen, Shea Vance, Julia Fouts, Helene Simmons, Lydia Mutz, Grace Marino, Sarina Locascio, Victoria Ehrman, and Carli Cocco. These seniors battled against some adversity over the years and without a doubt taught us all a lesson in perseverance!

Our cheer program opened their season with first-place routines across the board at the Lincoln-Way East Invite! Top scores in Freshmen, JV, and Co-ed divisions had the coaches and fans amazed! Jaida Bender, Isabella Giertuga, Marissa Pasco, Elyssa Pickett-Klimek, and Grady Travis have not let their focus slide and continue to lead the way for the Porters! The team was crowned as 2021 sectional champions and then honored our entire community with a record-setting State finals performance, winning the 2021 Co-ed State Championship trophy! We are so proud of the efforts and talent this program brings us year in and year out! Truly the definition of PORTER PRIDE!

Girls’ basketball opened their season with a few tough losses to some SWSC foes, but got back on track with a great team effort this past weekend! Seniors Sydney Furr, Zoe Kladis, Elena Knebel, and Miranda Oesterreich lead a talented mix of players that will continue to improve and compete within a daunting SWSC schedule and was right on pace for team victories! The team won 4 of their last 5 games and gave area powers all they could handle down the stretch.

The Porter boys’ basketball team bounced back in a big way with exciting back-to-back wins. Matas Deksnys, Scott Szymkowiak, Sam Trafton, and Evangelos Vassilakis have all played valuable minutes and had tremendous leadership night in and night out. The boys finished the year 3rd overall in the rugged SWSC Blue and finished with a 12-4 record overall. Tremendous season gentlemen!

Our bowling programs are disappointed there will be no state series because these teams are loaded!! The boys led by seniors Jim Kontos finished 2nd in the SWSC conference tourney. Our defending State Champion girls and 1st-year head coach Lynda Siezega would have been poised for another great run but will look to just racking up as many pins as they can throughout the season. Seniors Payton Vandenburg, Grace Sullivan, Chloe Siezega, and Meghan Bacys will continue to provide great leadership for the program through the season, winning the SWSC title and the largest girls bowling invite held this season, being the “unofficial” state champions!

Our newest winter sport with the IHSA Changes is badminton. These girls have been the picture of cooperation, adjusting to late notice of the season being moved up! The girls have been competing fiercely and winning many of the dual matches they have had and claiming the SWSC and Sectional titles. Exceptional senior leadership and commitment make this team one for the ages, regardless of state series events. Seniors Korryn Swedko, Adrianna Sosa, Jennifer Sieczka, Justina Piwoni, Miracle McClendon, Shea Maley, and Kirsten Adamski have worked so hard and we appreciate all the things they do for our program!

Our spring seasons led to more victories and hardware for your Porters as well!

Varsity football had a tremendous growth rate, powering to a 4-2 record, and was certainly poised for some amazing things. The defense, led by Joe Fiorillo, Nolan Ganser, Jett Ciucci, and a host of underclassmen was the strength for sure. Offensively, Riley Pheiffer, Kyle Yehling, and the senior offensive linemen Matt Johnson, Kyle Hartman, Dominic Picciola, Payton Potempa, and Connor Hearn, were stellar all season long, opening big holes for junior running back Andrew Lopresti. Tremendous job by our senior class getting this program pointed in the right direction!

Girls volleyball, led by Nadia Goich, Ellie Anselmo, Jacquelyn Wheaton, Kelly Wojckiewicz, and Eileen Mitchell had a tremendous season, going 9-3 over the course of the spring. The team will miss these seniors tremendously but will return with a talented and driven core of underclassmen and an equally talented JV team from this season! Big things ahead for the Porters girls volleyball program!

Boys soccer won the SWSC Blue division with a tough overtime victory in the final conference game of the year! The Porters battled each and every week to claim the title. Sebastian Molek, Ramon Garcia, and David Vetrinas earned all-conference recognition as seniors along with juniors Gabe Czako and Makonnen Stampley. Congratulations boys on another title for the program!

Our summer seasons are in full swing as we have already had tremendous efforts and results from our Baseball WJOL tournament champions and boys and girls lacrosse programs taking down some serious victories. Boys volleyball has started red hot with a 10-2 record looking forward to hosting the IHSA regional in a few weeks! Girls soccer is playing as one of the top programs in the area and tennis, track and field, and wrestling are looking to continue to make some noise this season!
