Happy Fall!! The 2021 fall athletic season has had some exciting moments as well as provided opportunities for growth! As the temps cool and the leaves fall, our teams were eager to strut their stuff this season and captured some SWSC, regional, and sectional crowns!
The pride and dedication our coaches and student-athletes have shown this fall is amazing! Tremendous amounts of work, sacrifice, and dedication have gone into providing many of our fall student-athletes with amazing experiences.
Safety and opportunity were the main focus this fall season once again as our student-athletes, coaches, and community continue to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the pandemic could not impact our PORTER PRIDE! We had amazing community and parent support throughout it all!
The girls’ cross-country team is coming off another very successful season with a strong core of runners returning. Head coach Regan Cronholm and the girls had another fantastic season, finishing 2nd in the SWSC Blue, 2nd at Regionals, and 4th at Sectionals, and qualifying for the IHSA State meet! Kayla Shea, Sam Weisner, and Sydney Fontaine had great seasons for the team, but the team responded to each challenge presented to them this year. Great season, girls!
The boys’ cross-country team under Head Coach Tom Razo continues to reload each year. This year’s squad was young, led by sophomores Cameron Valcich and Caleb Brownlee, but senior John “Jack” Kajmowicz was the lone state qualifier from the sectional Meet. Jack showed amazing improvement each meet and became a State Qualifier through his hard work and mental toughness! Congrats to all the boys on another successful campaign.
The boys’ golf team under the guidance of the head coach Matt Eber had another fantastic season. The boys performed well week in and week out, finishing 2nd at conference, 3rd at regionals, and won the Sectional! The boys made a valiant effort at the state meet, narrowly missing the score needed to advance to day 2. Lots of great scores and Brody McCarthy won the SWSC Athlete of the Year for the SWSC Blue Conference!
Head coach Grant Ferkaluk welcomed back a solid nucleus of girls ready to dive into another season. With several seasoned veterans and some quick young swimmers, this team improved every day and was very competitive at the sectional meet! Hayley Bogden narrowly missed qualifying in the 100 yard butterfly but AWD swimmers Ellie Fontanetta and Hannah Ostrander qualified for the state meet!
Coach Matt Major’s team finished 2nd in the SWSC but won the IHSA Regional title and finished 4th, just missing qualifying as a team at the Sectional meet. Lizzie Anderson tied for 1st at the sectional meet and finished her career 7th at the state meet!
Head coach Bob Champlin and the girls' tennis team finished 2nd at the sectional meet and doubles team Emilia and Patricia Jurzyk finished 2nd at the IHSA Sectional meet and qualified for state!
Our girls' volleyball program had an amazing season, totaling 31 wins (25 consecutive), an SWSC title, a Regional title, and amazing teamwork and comradery the entire season. Coach Mraz’ squad played with intensity and determination night in and night out. Led by nine seniors, Christian, Bella, Xeni, Ava, Eileen F, Eileen M, Lindsey, Anna, and Cameryn, tremendous leadership and pride were shown all season. What an amazing run for these ladies!
Our football team finished as co-champions in the SWSC Blue for the first time in the history of the conference! The boys, led by Coach Czart, have been playing tremendously all season long! With strong defense and big-play offense, the boys of fall hosted their first home playoff game in 17 years with a 35-10 win in round 1 and recently defeated GB West 34-0 in round 2! The Porters look to continue their winning ways as they advance to the quarter-finals! Keep the plays coming men!!
Finally, we are so excited for the season Coach Beal and the Soccer program has just completed! SWSC champions, regional, sectional, super-sectional champions battled adversity and showed tremendous resolve and toughness in their final matches. First, rallying to force Bloom into OT and eventually advance to the sectional title game. Then, trailing by 2 with under 10 minutes left, the boys once again forced OT and came away with the Super-sectional title! These men never let down and battled eventually State champs to the wire, then winning the 3rd place trophy game, scoring 2 goals while shorthanded!! The character, resolve, and fortitude displayed all season long by this team will be the stuff of legend!
Overall, our Porters continued to display incredible character, pride, and talent on the fields, courses, pools, floors, and sidelines all fall long. So much to be proud of and celebrate!
